Improved: “New Donors” now consider joint donor relationships

New donor counts in Giving now take joint donor relationships into account. If the other person in a joint donor relationship has already given, the second person won’t show up as a new donor when they make their first gift.

Previously, a spouse giving for the first time under their own profile was counted as new, even if the couple had been giving for years under the other spouse’s profile. Now Giving checks whether the other person in the joint relationship has already given before labeling someone new.

This update helps when you:

  • Report on first-time givers and want the number to reflect truly new donors, not new profiles for people who already give with their joint donor.

  • Follow up with new donors, and don’t want to send a welcome to a couple who have been giving for years.

  • Track giving growth over time and want your new donor trend to stay accurate.

Where this applies:

  • The “new donors” checkbox on the By Donor report in Giving

  • The “new donors” count on the Giving dashboard

  • The “newest donors” widget in Home

  • The “first donated” list condition in People lists

Giving automations that use the “gives for the first time” rule already worked this way, so nothing changes there.
