Whether you're preparing annual reports for your denomination, comparing this year's membership growth to last year's, or just trying to answer "how many people became members this year?"—getting that information has required a lot of manual work. Until now, there wasn't a way to report on membership type changes over time; you could only see someone's current status. Many of you have been tracking this with custom fields and automations, or clicking through Activity feeds profile by profile.

Today, we're introducing two new list conditions that make membership type change reporting possible.

"Was" — for point-in-time snapshots

This condition answers: "Who were our members at year-end?"

List condition for membership type > was

Use this when you need to know who held a specific membership type on a particular date—like at the end of last year or last quarter—regardless of what changed before or after. Great for year-end reporting or comparing totals across years.

"Became" — for tracking transitions

This condition answers: "Who became a member this year?"

Filter options for a membership database, showing dropdowns for people type, membership type, status, and date range.

Use this when you need to know who transitioned to a status during a specific period. Perfect for tracking new members each year or pulling quarterly additions.

Pair with list result widgets for visual tracking

Want to see membership growth at a glance? Create a list using the "became" condition, then add a list results widget to your Home dashboard. You'll get a running count that updates as new members are added—no spreadsheets required.

We've backfilled historical data where possible, so you should be able to query changes going back to when you first added the profile to Planning Center.

We hope these conditions make your reporting a little easier—and save you from clicking through hundreds of Activity feeds. Let us know what you think!
